Gallery 446/Atelier 446 welcomes Shaktima
Brien as an Artist-in-residence.

Shaktima Brien will create an Art Installation, a movie set, and painted portraits of Palm Springs Celebrities, Characters and Personalities that are featured in MIRAGES, – a Film Noir she wrote on the Palm Springs Art Scene and its SociaLights, and that she will direct next summer. She will also be the Juror of our next international Visionary Art Competition in June, and curate a Futurist Show next fall.

Shaktima Brien curated the First Surreal Art Exhibition in Palm Springs at Gallery 446 in 2012, expanding from the Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art Surrealist Show in Los Angeles. A member of the Palm Springs Art Museum Artist Council and the Contemporary Art Council, her paintings were exhibited four times at the museum. Shaktima also received an Honorable Mention from the City of Palm Springs Public Arts Commission Annual Juried Art Show, and a First Prize for her screenplay Road Yin at The Palm Springs Writers Guild Writers’ Contest.

In 2004, her tableaux were exhibited at the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History for the premiere of “Signs of Time”, a film on archeologist Marija Gimbutas. In the 90′s, selected pieces by Judy Freeman, Associate Curator of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, were included in a Women's Art Caucus Juried Exhibition, and featured in the Daily News. Other pieces were sold at the Shirley MacLaine and Whoopi Goldberg Art Auction.

“Her most powerful compositions are abstractions that function as objective correlatives for mystical union with sacred forces.” “The paintings are impassioned cries of life and love.”

Betty Ann Brown. Ph.D., Art Historian

Originally influenced by Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Gaughin, Frida Kahlo, Judy Chicago and Francesco Clemente, Brien further expanded after seeing The Spiritual in Art, 1890-1985, an exhibition curated by Maurice Tushman at LACMA, and practicing Zen and Tantra-Yoga.

Shaktima’s last painting “Metamorphosis”, a 12 x 6 feet, evolved through a period of twenty years to reflect the transformation of human consciousness and the evolution of the American Dream.

Brien’s work can be found in private residences in France, Switzerland, Canada and the United States.
