| SURREAL VISIONS VIRTUAL EXHIBITION My work examines dynamic relationships between female identity, machines, sexuality and power. I am intrigued by the discovery of vintage dress patterns, sewing notions and industrial machines used by my seamstress mother during the Great Depression, I re-purposed these elements to explore alternate relationships, both symbolic and real, between woman and machine in modern society. In doing so, I contrast the precise graphic design of tissue paper patterns with impressionistic and abstract images representing the final material product of a domestic activity and personal hand-craftsmanship. Art critic Shana Nys Dambrot commented in the Huffington Post: “In Mother Machine, Susan Melly employs iconography and materials culled from a retro world of dress patterns and seamstress work, and features a curvaceous, ornate nearly anthropological sewing machine, mannequins, and a trove of eccentrically notated industrial directives on treating the female form.
