It is in the hyperbole of emotion that our truths reside. It is the reactions to the unexpected twist that most reveal our hearts.

Deconstructing Marilyn
By Martin Prew

Mixed Media, 2015

Marilyn the icon was taken apart in the tabloids in her day as she endured a life in the fishbowl of Hollywood. Her legacy affords us the understanding that icons are people who often crave validation but cannot draw the line between their professional life and their emotional stability in the hot white light of the paparazzi.

When the iconic Marilyn statue was taken down in downtown Palm Springs, the photographer Millicent Harvey was there to brilliantly capture the public spectacle of the three-story sculpture being deconstructed.

These are the elements I combined along with tabloid headlines of the day and representations of the severe environmental conditions that smoke trees and other desert plants endure, survive and flourish in this unforgiving environment. This metaphor is created to pay homage to the conditions and costs that are paid for becoming an enduring symbol of our collective landscape.

Jackie
By Martin Prew

Oil on Canvas, 2014

She is centerpiece of an eight painting series of icons of the 20th century. Jackie represented the magic of Camelot, the grace under the influence of tremendous pressure and power.

The inspiration for this iconic portrait series came about during the economic downturn of 2008. I wanted to create images that celebrated some of the most influential and creative minds in music, art, cinema, science, fashion, sports and activism—of the last century.

I wanted to execute them in a way that was as unique and optimistic as the subjects themselves. The hope is to encourage creativity and the appreciation of how these people managed totouch our lives.

Dusk
By Martin Prew

Oil on Canvas, 2013

Somewhere between afternoon and evening there is a magical time of day that turns hardened landscapes into graceful and morphing shades of our imagination.

Colors drift and dust and moisture creates a medium within which a holographic canvas hosts an ever-changing pallet of light and form as fleeting as the emotions it stirs.

Deserts turn into oceans, fields turn into moors, mountains turn into rivers until darkness takes over and returns the landscape to its daytime persona. Dusk captures a moment in time that allows us to fill in the details of location, love and life.
