| SURREAL VISIONS VIRTUAL EXHIBITION I am a self-taught painter – which in my definition means that I followed the classic method of close study of the masters of art. While adapting the work of Matisse, to pick one example, to my own style, I learned not only about his ideas, techniques, and color use, but also how to make my own ideas work. The geometric basis of my recent work is derived from the patterns used in the cinder block “privacy walls” that are so prevalent in Palm Springs’ mid-century homes. Theoretic concerns, like the overlay of patterns onto themselves in different sizes & configurations, the interplay of detail on the surface versus the depth created by color value differences, etc. are a lot of visual fun.
